US, Bangladesh Vow To Fight Terror

US Secretary of State Mr. John Kern visited Bangladesh on August 29, 2016 to discuss security cooperation after a series of killings by Islamist militants, as well as economic developme'hr and human rights. Bangladesh's Foreign Minister Mr. A.H. Mahmood Ali received Kerry at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on his arrival from Geneva by a special aircraft. Secretary of State visited Bangabandhu Memorial Museum and paid respect to Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Mr. Kerry met with Prime Minister Ms. Sheikh Hasina, Opposition and civic leaders during the one-day visit, his first to Bangladesh as Secretary of State.
Offering the US help in Bangladesh's fight against terrorism, Mr. Kerry expressed his country's eagerness to closely work with the intelligence agencies of Bangladesh. Mr. Kerry said that Bangladesh and the United States would fight against terrorism together. He said that the US was interested to work closely with Bangladesh's intelligence. Mr. Kerry said that his country has a number of experts who can help fight against the violent extremism. During the hour-long meeting with the Prime Minister, the US Secretary of State laid emphasis on exchanging information with Bangladesh.
Bangladesh Prime Minister Ms. Sheikh Hasina said that the country wanted US assistance as the US is advanced in technology. The Prime Minister sought duty-and-quota-free access of all Bangladeshi products to the US market. Recalling the assassination of the country's Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and most of his family members in 1975, Ms. Hasina requested Mr. Kerry to extradite Mujib's convicted killers living in the US.
Mr. Kerry underscored the need for "more frequent" communication with Bangladesh for fighting terrorism and militancy. Bangladesh would see more US engagements in countering terrorism, he said. Mr. Kerry added that the non-Syrian terrorists of the Islamic State (IS) were returning to their homeland due to their continuous defeat in the battlefield. He stressed that the two countries can also work on climate change, health and energy.
