Iran Deploys 5-300 Missiles At Nuclear Site

Iran has deployed the Russian-supplied S-300 surface-to-air missile defence system around its Fordow underground uranium enrichment facility, Iranian state media reported on August 28, 2016. Iranian state TV aired, the footage of deployment of the recently delivered missile system to the nuclear site in the central Iran. Brigadier General Farzad Esmaili, commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps' (IRGC) air defence force told state TV that their main priority was to protect Iran's nuclear facilities under any circumstances. The general did not say whether the system was operational, but added that Iran's sky is one of the most secure in the Middle East.
Earlier in the day, Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei said that Iran's military power is for defensive purposes. He said that foreign opposition and widespread hype over Russia's delivery of the S-300 air defence system to Iran and the status of the Fordo nuclear facility were major examples of the enemy's wickedness. He urged the air defence base to remain vigilant, take timely action, and use different approaches and advanced means.
Iran and the six major powers had reached a landmark nuclear deal in 2015 aimed at curbing Iran's nuclear programme in exchange for lifting nuclear-related sanctions imposed on Tehran over its disputed nuclear work. Enrichment of uranium at the Fordow facility, around 100 km south of Tehran, has stopped since the implementation of the nuclear deal in January. Russia, under pressure from the West, in 2010 cancelled a contract to deliver S-300s to Iran. But Russian President Mr. Vladimir Putin lifted that self-imposed ban in April 2015, after an interim deal was reached between Iran and the six powers. In August, Iran said that Russia had delivered main parts of the system to the country, adding that the missile system would be completely delivered by the end of 2016

Colombian Government, Rebel Group FARC Sign Historic Peace Accord

Colombian government and the rebel group Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) on August 24, 2016 signed a historic peace accord to end more than five decades of conflict. As per the terms of agreement, FARC will give up its armed struggle and join the legal political process. The agreement was signed by the head of the Colombian delegation, Mr. Humberto de la Calle, and the chief FARC negotiator, Nit Ivan Marquez in the Cuban capital Havana, Cuba. A joint statement released after signing of the accord said that both sides agreed to work together to address social exclusion, to deliver justice to the victims of the conflict and build a stable and enduring peace. Under the agreement. fead out by Mediators Norway and Cuba,. the rebels will lay down their arms within 180 days of a final accord and demobilise into 23 temporary zones and eight camps. The ceasefire will only kick in when the final deal is agreed, although the two sides effectively stopped attacks almost a year ago and violence is already at a historic low.
During their transition to democratic politics, the FARC's weapons will be handed over to the United Nations, which will begin a mission to verify the ceasefire. The government will guarantee the safety of ex-rebels and their political allies, who have historically been targets for right-wing paramilitary groups, the accord said. Special protection units, comprising both ex-rebels and security forces, will guard FARC politicians and other community leaders.

China Launches World's First Quantum Communication Satellite

China on August 16, 2016 launched the world's first quantum satellite named Quantum Experiments at Space Scaler (QUESS) satellite. The satellite was launched from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centre in the remote northwestern province of Gansu. The satellite will help establish hack-proof communications between space and the ground. The satellite is nicknamed Micius, after a 5th century BC Chinese philosopher and scientist who has been credited as the first one in human history conducting optical experiments. It is designed to establish hack-proof quantum communications by transmitting uncrackable keys from space to the ground. The satellite is both an extreme test of the weird properties of quantum mechanics, and a technology testbed for what could be the start of a global, unhackable communications network. It will enable secure communications between Beijing and Urumqi, the capital of China's violence-prone far western region of Xinjiang.
The satellite will circle the Earth once every 90 minutes after it enters a sun-synchronous orbit at an altitude of 500 km.

A team led by Mr. Jian-Wei Pan of the University of Science and Technology of China in Hefei will conduct its own experiments with QUESS, using photons to test quantum entanglement, in which the quantum properties of two particles are linked even when separated, over a record-breaking 1,200 kilometres. The team will also test quantum key distribution, a form of secure communication in which the laws of quantum mechanics prevent eavesdroppers from snooping in. If successful, they hope to create a communications network. First, QUESS will undergo three months of testing. If everything is correct, it would be handed over to the scientists for scientific experiment, said Mr. Pan

Russia, Turkey Agree To Restore Ties After Diplomatic Rift

Russia and Turkey took a big step toward normalising relations on August 9, 2016, with their leaders announcing an acceleration in trade and energy ties at a time when both countries have troubled economies and strains with the West. Russian President Mr. Vladimir Putin received his Turkish counterpart Mr. Recep Tayyip Erdogan in a Tsarist-era palace outside his home city of St. Petersburg. Both the leaders patched their relations and pledged to restore close economic relations. Russian President Mr. Vladimir Putin agreed to work toward restoring full relations with Turkey, but said that rebuilding trade ties would be time consuming. He said that Russian trade sanctions on Turkey would be phased out step by step.
President Mr. Erdogan said that the two countries would restore their yearly

bilateral trade target of $100 billion and would speed up the resumption of charter flights from Russia to Turkey. Mr. Erdogan also said that he was ready to build a natural gas pipeline with Russia and negotiate a deal to construct Turkey's first nuclear power plant. The two leaders agreed to meet later to seek common ground over how to resolve the crisis in Syria. It was Mr. Erdogan's first visit to Mr. Putin's hometown of St. Petersburg after the failed coup in Turkey in July 2016. Mr. Erdogan is turning to Russia after post-coup criticism from the West.
The diplomatic relations between the two nations went wrong in November 2015 when Turkey shot down a Russian bomber, the Su-24 jet, on the Syrian border. After this incident, Russia imposed trade sanctions and suspended Russian package tours to Turkey. The incident also put two energy projects, the TurkStream gas pipeline across the Black Sea and the Akkuyu nuclear plant being

built by Russia's Rosatom in Turkey, on hold. While progress in the talks is expected on economic issues, the conflict in Syria remains a sticking point. Russia's bombing campaign in support of Syria's President Mr. Bashar al-Assad had already put a chill on relations between Moscow and Ankara, which supports rebel groups in Syria's five-year civil war and wants to see Assad leave power.
